After spending time with the "hogs" it is difficult to think about your daily routine in the same way.The future of the metropolis, and the basic welfare of its citizens, depends on the efforts and sacrifices of these unseen miners and their completion of City Water Tunnel #3. Despite its importance, very few people know about this mammoth excavation, or the story of the sandhogs.

Public art venues and installations will afford the larger Sandhog Project to capture the public's imagination by allowing them to view their daily urban environment from a different perspective. Images of 470 million year old rock being tunneled, and the unforgettable personalities of the sandhogs will appear throughout the city instead of the expected advertisements. Public art will help build excitement for the urban miners and public works in general. It will also illuminate for the public the interrelated worlds of their special metropolis.
